Experian is a registered credit bureau. It does not lend money or decide whether you get credit; it holds the record that lenders read. Up, its free consumer service, is where you see your score and report and lodge a dispute. Experian’s routes below are published on experian.co.za and the National Credit Regulator register.

Experian’s contact page warns that it cannot answer personal credit report queries sent through its business feedback forms, so keep servicedesksouthafrica@experian.com for business matters. Personal queries go through Up, its chatbot Ed, or the WhatsApp number. The National Credit Regulator lists Experian South Africa (Pty) Ltd as registered credit bureau NCRCB16, at Ballyoaks Office Park, 35 Ballyclare Drive, Bryanston.

Your Experian free credit score on Up

Up is a web app rather than a download, and it is free to use. After registering you can:

  • view your Experian credit report and score on one dashboard
  • see your credit history, current payments and balances
  • use a budgeting tool
  • log and track a dispute

Your score is Experian’s own. TransUnion, XDS and other bureaus calculate theirs from their own records, so a different number from another bureau is normal and not by itself an error.

What my Experian credit score costs and what you can dispute

Cost. Experian points out that the National Credit Act entitles you to one free credit report a year from each bureau. On Up you can view your report as often as you like at no cost.

Disputes. You have the right to challenge information you believe is incorrect. Experian says it has 20 business days to investigate and respond.

Identity fraud. Experian’s research found it takes an average of 292 days for people to discover their information has been used fraudulently, which is why it recommends checking your report regularly.

Disputing something wrong on your Experian report

  • Log the dispute on Up and keep the reference.
  • If the listing came from a lender, contact that lender too, quoting your dispute reference.
  • If there is no satisfactory answer after 20 business days, go to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, which now handles credit information complaints, on 0860 800 900 or info@nfosa.co.za.

You do not need to pay a “credit clearing” service to lodge a dispute: Experian handles disputes free of charge on Up.
