Families are targeted at exactly this moment because death notices are public and the need is urgent. A caller who knows the deceased’s name and says a payment is needed to release funds is working from information anyone can obtain.

What a funeral policy is, and is not

• A funeral policy pays a cash lump sum, usually quickly, intended to cover funeral costs. It is not the estate.
• The estate is separate and is wound up through the Master of the High Court. A funeral payout does not settle the deceased’s debts or distribute their property.
• Waiting periods apply on most policies, typically for natural causes in the early months. Check the policy terms before assuming a claim will pay.
• Premiums must be up to date. A lapsed policy is the commonest reason a claim is refused.

What you will need

Generally the death certificate, the deceased’s identity document, the policy number and the claimant’s identity document and banking details. Confirm the exact list on the call rather than making two trips.
