NUMSA Contact Details
The NUMSA contact number for head office is 011 689 1700 and the general email is info@numsa.org.za. NUMSA is the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa. It was formed in 1987 when several metal and motor unions merged, it is affiliated to the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), and it organises workers in motor and fuel retail, auto manufacturing, tyre and rubber, engineering, energy, mining and a long list of other sectors. According to the Service Charter, the head office and regional offices work weekdays from 08h00 to 17h00, and local offices work Monday to Friday from 09h00 to 17h00 and Saturday from 09h00 to 13h00. The charter gives the head office street as Bree Street and the website gives Lilian Ngoyi Street. It is the same building at the same corner, because Bree Street in Newtown was renamed Lilian Ngoyi Street.

Day to day help comes from your shop steward and your local office rather than from head office. NUMSA publishes nine regions, each with a regional office and several local offices:

Parts of that list look older than the rest of the site, and a few numbers differ from the Service Charter. The Ekurhuleni regional office, for example, is 011 892 4554 on the website and 011 892 5073 in the charter. If one number does not answer, try the other or phone head office.
NUMSA funeral benefit and financial services
Two benefit lines sit outside the union itself. The member funeral benefit is provided by Doves on 0860 11 22 88, and NUMSA Financial Services is on 011 873 3578. Both numbers are published inside the NUMSA joining app.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
How to join NUMSA
Membership costs 1% of your basic wage, deducted by your employer through a stop order. Signing the stop order also cancels your membership of any other union. To apply online, have these ready:
- Identity: South African ID number or passport number, date of birth and residential address.
- Work details: employer name and address, department, job grade, job title and your clock number.
- Funeral beneficiaries: your spouse or life partner and your children. NUMSA says members who leave these out are not eligible for funeral benefits.
Funeral cover starts once your first stop order is deducted and covers you, your spouse and your children under 18, but not parents or siblings. Members also get legal advice at workplace level, at the bargaining council, at the CCMA and in the Labour Court. To resign, give your Local Secretary four weeks’ written notice. Subscriptions already paid are not refunded.
Escalation route
- Raise the problem with your shop steward at work.
- If it is not resolved, take it to your local office and then your regional office, using the numbers above.
- If the region does not respond, write to head office at info@numsa.org.za or phone 011 689 1700, quoting your membership number and the office you dealt with.
The Service Charter mentions a national member call centre, but no call centre number has been published yet. Until it is, head office is the national route.
