We could not verify any NCR registered credit provider trading as Halifax Loans in South Africa, and we are not publishing a contact number for one. If you are looking for this lender because you have been offered a loan, read this page before you pay anything.

Halifax is a British banking brand. It is a UK high street bank and does not operate as a consumer lender in South Africa. A South African “Halifax Loans” offer is not coming from that bank.

A financial regulator has published a warning using this name

The United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority publishes a warning about a “clone firm” trading as Halifax Finance Loan, first published on 31 December 2015. A clone firm is one that copies the identity of a genuine authorised business in order to appear legitimate.

What makes that warning directly relevant here is the contact detail it lists. The clone gave a South African address, at Lancaster Road in Vincent, East London, along with a South African mobile number. The genuine business being copied was Halifax Share Dealing, an authorised UK firm with no connection to the operation described.

The FCA also notes that operators like this change their contact details over time, moving to new numbers, email addresses and addresses. A number that differs from the one in that warning is not evidence that a different, legitimate business is behind it.

How to check any South African lender yourself

You do not have to take our word for it, and you should not. Every credit provider operating in South Africa must be registered with the National Credit Regulator, and the register is public.

The Register of Registrants lists credit providers, debt counsellors, credit bureaus, payment distribution agencies and alternative dispute resolution agents. It also shows registrations that were cancelled or have lapsed, which matters, because a lender may quote a registration number that is no longer valid.

The upfront fee is the thing to watch

This is the single most useful rule to know, and it is law rather than advice. Under the National Credit Act, an upfront payment for a loan is unlawful. The National Credit Regulator has warned the public about exactly this pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Is Halifax Loans South Africa a real lender?

We could not verify any NCR registered credit provider under that name. Halifax is a UK bank and does not lend to consumers in South Africa. Check the NCR register before dealing with anyone using the name.

Is it legal to charge me a fee before paying out a loan?

No. Under the National Credit Act an upfront payment for a loan is unlawful.

How do I check if a lender is registered?

Search the Register of Registrants at ncr.org.za, or call the NCR on 0860 627 627. Check the registration number itself, not a certificate you were sent.

NCR details were read on official sources and the clone firm warning on the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s own register of warnings, on 25 August 2026.
