Home Affairs publishes a direct number for each of its Johannesburg offices, which is unusual for a government department and worth using. The numbers below come from the Gauteng provincial contact directory on the department’s own site, dha.gov.za.

Home Affairs offices in Johannesburg

The department lists an office manager by name against each of these, several with a personal mobile number. Those mobiles are individual staff contacts and are not repeated here. The office landline is the published route and is the one to use.

Further out in Gauteng

The Tshwane Regional Office, on 012 395 4306 and 012 663 6084, covers Pretoria rather than Johannesburg and cannot help with a Johannesburg application.

Do this before you queue

Smart ID and passport applications can be started online through the Home Affairs eHomeAffairs portal, and a growing list of bank branches take the biometrics and issue the card, which is faster than a Home Affairs office. Both routes are listed on dha.gov.za under Bank Branches; Gauteng has by far the most participating branches in the country.
