Post boxes, and what happens when a branch closes
A post box is rented from a specific branch, which is why closures cause more trouble with boxes than with anything else.
- Rental is annual and lapses if unpaid. Once it lapses, mail addressed to the box may be returned to sender rather than held.
- Ask what happens to your box if the branch closes, and get the answer in writing. Do not assume mail follows you automatically.
- Tell anyone who writes to you, particularly banks, medical schemes, insurers and SARS, before a box lapses. A returned statement can trigger account problems that take far longer to fix.
- Take identification and the box number for any query, and keep the rental receipt.
A post box is not proof of address
People are caught by this constantly when opening an account or completing verification. A PO Box number is a postal address, not a residential one, and it will usually be rejected where proof of physical address is required.
- Proof of address normally means a document showing where you live, such as a municipal bill, a lease or a bank statement with a street address.
- If bills are not in your name, most institutions accept an affidavit from the person whose name they are in, together with their document. Ask what that specific institution requires rather than guessing.
- The rules come from financial legislation, not from the Post Office, so a counter cannot help you around them.
