Helplines differ from customer care lines: they exist for urgent help, for reporting, and for situations where you may not want to give your name.
ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not any of the companies listed here and cannot act on your behalf. Everything on this page is a routing aid so you reach the right official channel with the right information in hand.
Who actually handles this
It depends what kind of help you need, and choosing the right one matters more here than anywhere else. An emergency number is staffed for an emergency; a fraud line is staffed to freeze an account; a reporting line takes information and may let you stay anonymous.
What to do, in order
- For anything happening now that threatens life or safety, use an emergency number rather than any other line.
- For suspected fraud on a bank account, go straight to that bank’s fraud line, which is staffed around the clock.
- For reporting information about a crime rather than an emergency, use a reporting line, which may allow anonymity.
- Have the location and the essential facts ready before you dial. Emergency operators work from location first.
- Stay on the line until the operator has what they need.
What to have ready before you make contact
- The location, as precisely as you can give it.
- What is happening, in one sentence.
- Whether anyone is injured or in immediate danger.
- Your account number and ID, for a fraud line.

How to tell a genuine contact route from a planted one
- It came from the organisation’s own website, typed in by you, rather than from a search advert, a social media reply or a directory listing.
- It matches what is printed on something physical you already hold: the back of your card, a statement, an invoice or a delivery note.
- You started the contact. Anyone who calls or messages you first, then asks you to verify yourself, has the relationship backwards.
- It never asks for a one time PIN, a CVV, a password or remote access. No legitimate organisation needs any of those to help you, and there is no exception to this.
A number that fails any one of those is not worth using for anything involving your money, your identity document or your account.
Common mistakes that cost time
- Calling a customer care line during an emergency, where it is neither staffed nor equipped.
- Not knowing your location. It is the first thing an emergency operator asks and the hardest to supply under stress.
- Delaying a call to a bank fraud line to check statements first. Report first, reconcile afterwards.
- Assuming a reporting line will identify you. Several allow anonymous reports.
The scam to watch for
Fake versions of well known helplines exist, particularly for fraud lines, because a person who believes they are being defrauded will follow instructions quickly. Take a bank’s fraud number from the back of your card, which cannot be tampered with by a search result.
If it is not resolved
The Consumer Goods and Services Ombud handles unresolved consumer complaints against participating suppliers, free of charge to the consumer. It also expects you to have gone through the supplier’s own complaints process first. The National Consumer Commission is the statutory consumer authority and handles matters that fall outside an ombud scheme’s remit.
Escalation works on evidence. Keep a short written log of every contact: the date, the channel you used, the name of the person you spoke to and the reference number you were given. Every formal complaints process asks for exactly that history, and having it ready is usually the difference between a fast resolution and starting over.

Frequently asked questions
What is the emergency number in South Africa?
10111 reaches the police. 112 works from a mobile phone. 10177 is for ambulance and fire.
Can I report a crime anonymously?
SAPS Crime Stop takes information and allows you to remain anonymous. It is for information rather than for an emergency in progress.
Where do I find my bank's fraud number?
On the back of your card and inside your banking app. Those are the two sources that cannot be replaced by a fake listing.
The contact routes on this page were checked against each organisation’s official source on 21 August 2026. Where a detail has changed, the official source is always the authority.
