The SMS and Please Call Me routes are the useful part
This is the detail most people do not know exists. You do not need airtime to raise a problem with a Western Cape health facility. A Please Call Me to 079 769 1207, or an SMS to 31022, both reach the same complaints system as the phone line.
The province states that a complaint capable of immediate resolution should get a call back within twenty minutes, and that for a complex complaint the facility itself should make contact within twenty minutes to say what will happen next. Note the time you called. That published standard is what you hold them to.
What a clinic does, and what it does not
- A clinic is primary care: chronic medication, immunisation, maternal and child health, family planning, TB and HIV services, minor injuries and general consultations.
- It is not a casualty department. Serious injury, chest pain, stroke symptoms or a difficult birth need a hospital, and an ambulance rather than a lift.
- Go early and take your clinic card and ID. Queues at public clinics are managed by arrival time, and chronic medication collection days are the busiest.
- Ask about a chronic medication collection point if you collect repeat medicine. Many patients can collect closer to home rather than queueing at the clinic.
- Emergency treatment may not be refused because of inability to pay, at any facility, public or private.
