Reserve gate fees are not the same as your booking
Resorts inside a game reserve sit behind a gate run by the reserve authority, not by the resort. This catches people out on arrival.
- Conservation or gate fees are usually charged separately, per person and per vehicle, on top of the accommodation rate.
- Gate opening and closing times are enforced and change with the season. Arriving after closing can mean not getting in at all.
- Confirm what your rate includes when booking, and ask specifically whether gate fees are in it.
- Camp sites often need your own power lead, water hose and firewood. Ask rather than assume.
Deposits and cancellation
Confirm banking details by voice before paying a deposit, especially where a quote arrives by email. Under the Consumer Protection Act you may cancel an advance booking, with the operator entitled to a reasonable cancellation fee rather than the full amount, and cancellation caused by death or hospitalisation cannot be charged for.
