Malaria free matters more than it sounds
This is the single most useful fact about the Pilanesberg for many travellers, and it is why families and older visitors choose it over reserves further north and east.
- No antimalarial course is needed, which removes a real obstacle for young children, pregnant travellers, and anyone whose medication interacts badly with prophylaxis.
- It is roughly two to three hours from Johannesburg by road, so it works as a short break rather than an expedition.
- Big Five viewing without a malaria area is an unusual combination in South Africa and is the main reason to prefer this region.
- Confirm the current position with a travel clinic anyway if anyone in the party is medically vulnerable. Malaria free is a description of the area, not medical advice.
A five suite lodge behaves differently
At this size there is no switchboard and no front desk shift. The number published is a mobile, so a call may go unanswered while staff are out on a drive. Email or a message usually gets a faster answer than calling repeatedly.
- Five suites means the lodge books out entirely, and a single family or group can take the whole property. Availability moves in blocks, not rooms.
- Ask about minimum ages. Small lodges frequently set a minimum age for game drives, or require a private vehicle for younger children at extra cost.
- Establish what the rate includes: meals, drives, drinks, and whether reserve or conservation levies are charged on top.
- Tell them about dietary requirements and mobility needs when booking, not on arrival. A small kitchen cannot improvise.
- Ask how to reach the gate and by when. Reserve access is controlled and arriving after gate closing can mean not getting in.
Deposits and cancellation
Small lodges usually take a substantial deposit and have stricter cancellation terms than hotels, because one cancelled suite is a fifth of the property. Get the terms in writing when you book.
Confirm banking details by voice on 076 056 5064 before transferring anything. Under the Consumer Protection Act you may cancel an advance booking, with the lodge entitled to a reasonable cancellation fee rather than the whole amount, and cancellation caused by death or hospitalisation cannot be charged for. Unresolved, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud is on 0860 000 272.
