Malaria free matters more than it sounds

This is the single most useful fact about the Pilanesberg for many travellers, and it is why families and older visitors choose it over reserves further north and east.

A five suite lodge behaves differently

At this size there is no switchboard and no front desk shift. The number published is a mobile, so a call may go unanswered while staff are out on a drive. Email or a message usually gets a faster answer than calling repeatedly.

Deposits and cancellation

Small lodges usually take a substantial deposit and have stricter cancellation terms than hotels, because one cancelled suite is a fifth of the property. Get the terms in writing when you book.

Confirm banking details by voice on 076 056 5064 before transferring anything. Under the Consumer Protection Act you may cancel an advance booking, with the lodge entitled to a reasonable cancellation fee rather than the whole amount, and cancellation caused by death or hospitalisation cannot be charged for. Unresolved, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud is on 0860 000 272.
