Telkom Funeral Cover Contact Details
Telkom Loyalty Funeral Cover is free, but it is not permanent. You earn one month of cover at a time by recharging, and if you stop recharging the cover stops. That is the fact to understand before anything else on this page.
Contact
- Information and claims: 0800 229 900, toll free
- Claims email: adminhub@riskslip.co.za
- Opt in and nominate a beneficiary: dial *180# and select Funeral Cover
The claims mailbox is on riskslip.co.za, not a telkom.co.za address. That is the administrator handling the benefit rather than Telkom itself, and it is the correct address even though the domain looks unrelated.
How the cover is earned, month by month
- Opt in by dialling *180# and nominating your beneficiary.
- Recharge R100 or more in Telkom prepaid airtime in a calendar month, as one recharge or several added together.
- You then qualify for R10 000 of cover from the start of the following month, valid until the end of that month.
Read that last line twice. Cover for March is earned by recharging in February, and it expires at the end of March. A month where you recharge less than R100 is a month with no cover in the month after it. This is a loyalty benefit tied to spend, not a policy you hold.
Who qualifies
- A registered South African citizen, aged between 16 and 75.
- A Telkom Thola More or Telkom More Prepaid customer. Contract customers do not qualify for this particular benefit.
- Opted in through *180# with a beneficiary nominated.
Nominate the beneficiary, and tell them
The R10 000 is paid in cash to the person you nominate, not to a funeral parlour. Two things follow. First, if you never complete the nomination on *180#, there is nobody for the benefit to be paid to. Second, a beneficiary who does not know the cover exists will not claim it — tell the person, and tell them the number to phone. This is the most common way free cover of this kind goes unclaimed.
No medical underwriting
There are no health questions and no medical examination, which is genuinely useful if you have been declined elsewhere. It also means the cover is modest and fixed at R10 000. Treat it as a supplement, not as a replacement for a funeral policy if R10 000 does not cover what you need.
Claiming
- Phone 0800 229 900 or email adminhub@riskslip.co.za, and get a claim reference on the first contact.
- You will need the death certificate, the BI-1663 notification of death, the beneficiary’s identity document and proof of the beneficiary’s own bank account.
- Be ready to show that the qualifying recharge was made in the month before the month of death. That is what the claim turns on.
Nobody should charge you for this
The cover is free, the opt-in is a USSD string you dial yourself, and the claim line is toll free. Anyone offering to register you, to activate cover or to speed up a claim for a fee is not connected to it. Telkom also sells separate paid funeral products; those are a different thing with their own premiums and terms, so be clear which one you are being sold.
If a claim is declined
Ask for the reason in writing. Not meeting the recharge threshold in the qualifying month is the likely ground, and it is checkable against your own recharge history. Unresolved, a funeral benefit complaint goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, free of charge to you.
