Who actually delivers the service
Some municipalities deliver services directly, and others use separate municipal entities. In Johannesburg, water sits with Johannesburg Water and electricity with City Power, while billing for both appears on your City of Johannesburg account. Ekurhuleni, by contrast, routes every service fault through one call centre.
Electricity has a further complication. Large areas, including parts of the metros, are supplied directly by Eskom rather than the municipality. Check the supplier named on your bill before reporting a power fault, since neither can work on the other’s network.
Always get a reference number
Whatever the service, ask for a reference number before ending the call. Without one you cannot follow up, escalate, or show that a defect was reported, and a repeat call is normally logged as a new job rather than escalating the original.

FAQs
- Which municipality handles my services? The one named on your municipal account, which is the authority responsible for your property.
- Why was my fault report not actioned? Often because it went to the wrong entity, for example a Johannesburg water fault sent to the City rather than Johannesburg Water.
- Is my electricity always municipal? No. Many areas are supplied directly by Eskom. Check the supplier named on your bill.
