Official source onlyIndependent directoryReport a wrong number

If someone has used your identity, register a protective listing with the South African Fraud Prevention Service. It is free, and it flags your identity number so that credit providers apply additional verification before opening an account in your name. Most victims never hear that this exists.

ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory and is not a credit bureau or fraud body.

What to do, in order

Act quickly and in writing; every step produces a document you will need later.

  • Report to the police and get a case number, and make an affidavit setting out what happened.
  • Get your credit reports. You are entitled to one free report a year from each bureau, and that is how you find the accounts you did not open.
  • Dispute each fraudulent account in writing with the credit provider and the bureau. They must investigate, and the entry is flagged meanwhile.
  • Notify your bank, and change passwords on email and banking from a clean device.

Preventing it

Never send certified copies of your identity document to an unverified recipient. Fake job adverts and fake rental listings exist largely to collect them. Write the purpose across a copy where you must hand one over.

If your phone suddenly loses all signal, treat it as a possible SIM swap and contact your bank immediately from another phone. Complaints about credit providers go to the National Credit Regulator, and disputes to the Credit Ombud, free. Police is 10111. Verified 26 August 2026.
