Cross-border coach travel needs valid travel documents for every passenger, children included. A passenger turned back at a border is not a refundable event on most operators’ terms.
Unabridged birth certificates and consent letters apply to minors on some crossings. Check the current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs on 0800 60 11 90 before booking, not at the border.
These routes were verified against the official Intercity website on 26 September 2026. Contact numbers do change, so confirm on the official page before relying on one for anything urgent. ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory, not Intercity, and cannot act on your behalf.
Eagle Liner is part of the Intercity group, which is why its published customer care address uses the intercity.co.za domain. It is not a wrong contact. Keep the ticket and the booking reference, because a refund or a claim for a missed connection is traced on the reference and nothing else.
Intercity bus services and how to book
Intercity Xpress has run luxury coaches since 2006. Popular routes include Tshwane to Margate via Durban, East Rand to Durban, Cape Town to Durban via Port Elizabeth and Tshwane to Matatiele via Kokstad. You can book an Intercity bus ticket online at intercity.co.za, on WhatsApp on 079 786 9989, at an Intercity booking office, or through third-party agents such as Computicket, Busbud and Flightsite.
Intercity does not publish an 0800 number. Its customer care line is 010 822 9000. On travel day, board with your ticket or ticket reference and your ID book, and be at the departure point 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
The service is branded Intercity Xpress on intercity.co.za, and its customer care line is 010 822 9000. See also our Intercity Express contact details page.

Intercity lists 21 booking offices across the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape. Each office has an address and email address but no individual phone number, so call 010 822 9000 for phone help.

Intercity call centre and self-service routes
- Check the official site at intercity.co.za, which carries the current contact details and online booking.
- WhatsApp bookings on 079 786 9989, which works over wifi and leaves you a written record.
- Email to customercare@intercity.co.za, which gives you a written record of what you asked and when.
- Calling outside peak times. Monday mornings and the hour after 17:00 are usually the worst for South African contact centres.
Intercity does not publish a live bus tracker. Its FAQ says passengers receive a text message when a bus is late, and you can call customer care on 010 822 9000 or contact your nearest office.
Intercity buses have aircon, reclining seats, USB chargers and toilets. Each passenger may take one suitcase up to 25kg free plus one piece of hand luggage, and extra weight costs R5 per kg. Only guide dogs are allowed on board.
Intercity refunds and cancellations
- More than 24 hours before departure: you can get a refund or reschedule, with a R50 admin fee. For a refund, cancel the ticket and capture your bank details, then a 21-day waiting period applies (excluding weekends).
- Less than 24 hours before departure: no cash refund, but you can reschedule with a R70 admin fee.
- 3 to 1 hours before departure: rescheduling with a R100 fee.
- Under 1 hour before departure: no refund and no rescheduling.
For a refund on an office booking you need the original ticket, a copy of the traveller’s ID and proof of banking details. For a third-party booking you need proof of payment, an ID copy and the ticket or reference. Intercity’s FAQ mentions a 20% cancellation fee for cancelling 24 hours before departure, which differs from the R50 admin fee in its conditions of carriage, so confirm the fee with customer care before you cancel.
What to have ready before you call Intercity
- A clear one line summary of what you need resolved.
- Your account, order or reference number if you already have one.
- The identity document or account holder details, since most South African providers verify who you are before discussing an account.
- Dates, amounts and any error message exactly as it appeared.
- A pen and paper for the reference number. Ask for one every time, because without it a follow up call starts from nothing.
Complaining to Intercity
If a first call does not resolve the matter, escalate through the operator’s own complaints process, in writing to customercare@intercity.co.za and quoting the booking reference. An operating-licence complaint goes to the provincial regulatory entity in the province where the operator is licensed.
Keep a short written log of each contact: the date, the channel you used, the name of the agent and the reference number. Most public transport complaint processes ask for exactly that history, and having it ready is usually the difference between a fast resolution and starting over. For other complaint routes, see the complaints and escalation contact pages.
Avoiding fake Intercity contact numbers
Contact details for well known South African brands are a common target for impersonation. Numbers that look official appear in search ads, social media replies and cloned websites, and the person answering is not Intercity.
- Reach Intercity through the official site at intercity.co.za rather than through a number in a search advert or a social media reply. The only WhatsApp number on intercity.co.za is 079 786 9989.
- Intercity will never ask you for your full card number, PIN, CVV, online banking password or a one time PIN. Nobody legitimate needs those to help you.
- Treat any caller who creates urgency, asks you to install remote access software, or asks you to move money to a safe account as fraudulent, and end the call.
- If you are unsure whether a call was genuine, hang up and dial the official number yourself rather than calling back a number the caller gave you.
For other operators, see the transport contact pages.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Intercity contact number?
Customer care is on 010 822 9000 and WhatsApp bookings on 079 786 9989. Confirm on intercity.co.za before relying on either, since numbers are changed from time to time.
Does Intercity have an 0800 number?
No. Intercity publishes no 0800 number. Call customer care on 010 822 9000 or use WhatsApp bookings on 079 786 9989.
Does the Intercity bus have toilets?
Yes. Intercity buses have toilets, aircon, reclining seats and USB chargers.
When do I get my Intercity refund?
If you cancel more than 24 hours before departure and capture your bank details, a 21-day waiting period applies (excluding weekends). Cancellations less than 24 hours before departure get no cash refund.
Where is the Intercity office in Johannesburg?
At Park Station, 32 Railway Street, Johannesburg (johannesburg@intercity.co.za). No Southgate office is listed.
How do I know an Intercity number is genuine?
Check it against the official site at intercity.co.za. A number that only appears in a search advert, a social media reply or a third-party directory should not be trusted for anything involving your account, your money or your identity document.
What should I do if nobody resolves my query?
Ask for the complaint reference and the escalation path on your first call, then follow the complaints process above. Keep the dates, agent names and reference numbers, because every formal complaint process will ask for them.
Can ContactDetails.co.za resolve this for me?
No. We are an independent directory, not Intercity, and we have no access to your account. Everything here is a routing aid so that you reach the correct official channel with the right information in hand.
Is there a cost to calling these numbers?
South African 0860 and 0861 numbers are charged at a share-call or standard rate depending on your provider, and 0800 numbers are toll free from a landline. Calls from a mobile are billed at your own operator’s rate, so check your plan if cost matters.
