Almost every payment scam is defeated by the same habit: confirm who you are paying, on a channel you chose, before the money leaves.

ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not any of the companies listed here and cannot act on your behalf. Everything on this page is a routing aid so you reach the right official channel with the right information in hand.

Who actually handles this

You, before you pay. Once an instant transfer lands in another account it is generally gone, and no bank or authority can simply reverse it.

What to do, in order

  1. Confirm the account holder’s name matches the business or person you mean to pay.
  2. Use a contact route you found yourself, not one supplied in the payment request.
  3. Treat any change of banking details as suspicious until confirmed by voice.
  4. Prefer a payment method you can dispute. Card payments can be challenged; instant transfers and cryptocurrency generally cannot.
  5. Send a small test payment first where the amount is large and the relationship is new.
  6. Never pay a business invoice into a personal account.

The three checks that catch almost everything

Almost every scam in this category fails at one of those three. The pressure to act quickly exists precisely to stop you running them.

Common mistakes that cost time

The scam to watch for

Urgency is the tell. Nearly every payment fraud includes a reason you must pay right now: a deadline, a discount, a delivery about to be lost. A genuine counterparty will wait ten minutes for you to confirm the account.

If it is not resolved

The Consumer Goods and Services Ombud handles unresolved consumer complaints against participating suppliers, free of charge to the consumer. It also expects you to have gone through the supplier’s own complaints process first. The National Consumer Commission is the statutory consumer authority and handles matters that fall outside an ombud scheme’s remit.

Escalation works on evidence. Keep a short written log of every contact: the date, the channel you used, the name of the person you spoke to and the reference number you were given. Every formal complaints process asks for exactly that history, and having it ready is usually the difference between a fast resolution and starting over.

Frequently asked questions

What payment method is safest?

One you can dispute. Card payments can be charged back through your bank. Instant EFT and cryptocurrency generally cannot be reversed.

How do I confirm an account holder's name?

Ask the payee to confirm it by voice on a number you sourced yourself, and check it against the registered business name.

Is a small test payment worth it?

For a large amount to a new counterparty, yes. It costs very little and it confirms the account is live and belongs to who you think.
