The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration is South Africa’s statutory labour dispute body, established under the Labour Relations Act. The contact details below were read from ccma.org.za on 2 September 2026.

Official contact channels

The CCMA also runs an anonymous fraud and corruption line through an independent service: 0860 666 348, WhatsApp 0860 004 004, or CCMA@behonest.co.za. That channel is for reporting fraud involving the CCMA itself – not for labour disputes.

Services and responsibilities

The CCMA conciliates and arbitrates disputes between employees and employers – dismissals, wages, unfair labour practice and retrenchment among them. It publishes that it has handled over 4.19 million referrals since 1996, with 193,069 referrals in the 2024/25 financial year, and that unfair dismissal accounted for 51% of them.

It also serves unions and employer organisations, bargaining councils and agencies, and houses the Essential Services Committee. Referring a dispute is free.

Office/address information

The national office and the Johannesburg office are two different buildings, and this trips people up.

  • National office: 28 Harrison Street, Johannesburg 2001
  • Johannesburg office: CCMA House, 127 Fox Street (corner Eloff), Johannesburg 2001 – phone 011 220 5000, johannesburg@ccma.org.za, Private Bag X96, Marshalltown 2107

A hearing is heard at the office covering the workplace, not at head office. The CCMA lists offices in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Vaal, Bloemfontein, Welkom, East London, Gqeberha, Durban, Newcastle, Pietermaritzburg, Port Shepstone, Richards Bay, Emalahleni, Mbombela, Secunda, Kimberley, Polokwane, Klerksdorp, Rustenburg, Vryburg, Cape Town and George – use the province selector on its contact page for the one you need.

Applications and escalation

Disputes are referred on the prescribed form, in person at an office or through the CCMA e-Referral service on its website. Time limits are short and they are the most common reason a case fails before it is heard – a dismissal dispute must generally be referred within 30 days of the dismissal, and an unfair labour practice within 90 days. Referring late requires a condonation application explaining the delay.

Complaints about how a case was handled go to complaints@ccma.org.za. That is an administrative channel: it does not reopen or overturn an award. An arbitration award is challenged by review in the Labour Court, on the grounds the Act allows, not by complaining to the CCMA.
