This page covers the insurance product sold as PMD – Prime Meridian Direct car insurance, now marketed under the Prime brand. It focuses on claiming and on the roadside assistance benefit rather than on the company itself. The contact routes were read from the official Prime site on 31 August 2026.
Official provider route
- Claims and policy service, care centre: 011 745 7800 – weekdays 08:00 to 17:00
- 24-hour roadside assist: 011 745 7800
- WhatsApp: 078 669 4947
- Email: [email protected]
Save 011 745 7800 to your phone now. It is the number for both the care centre and 24-hour roadside assistance, and roadside assistance is the one benefit you will need at the moment you are least able to look it up – at night, on a verge, possibly in poor signal.
Note the product name history: policies, debit orders and older documents may refer to Prime Meridian Direct or PMD. That is the same cover, now branded Prime.
Product or service support
PMD is direct car insurance, quoted and managed online with a client login portal and a network of approved repairers.
At the scene of an accident, in this order: make sure everyone is safe, call the police if anyone is injured or a vehicle is not driveable, photograph the vehicles, the damage, the position of the vehicles and the other party licence disc, and exchange details. Get the SAPS case number – the insurer will ask for it and a claim can stall without one.
When you phone to claim, have your policy number, identity number, the date, time and location, a description of what happened, the other party name, contact and vehicle registration, and the case number. Report the claim promptly – policies impose notification deadlines, and a late report is a common ground for a decline.
Use an approved repairer unless the insurer agrees otherwise in writing. Repairs done outside the approved network can affect both the guarantee on the work and what the insurer will pay.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
Three things decide most motor claim outcomes, and all three are worth confirming in writing while nothing is wrong:
- The regular driver. Cover is priced on who mainly drives the vehicle. If that has changed, tell the insurer – a claim where the actual driver was not disclosed is a standard decline.
- Where the vehicle is kept overnight. The insured parking address affects both premium and cover, and it must be current.
- Your excess. Know the amount payable before you claim, since it decides whether a small claim is worth making at all.
Confirm too whether a tracking device is a condition of your policy, and if so that the subscription is active – insurers do decline on a lapsed tracking subscription.
Escalation route
If a claim is declined or underpaid, ask for the decision in writing citing the policy clause relied on. That wording is what every escalation turns on, and an insurer must provide it.
Then escalate according to what went wrong:
- A declined or underpaid claim: National Financial Ombud Scheme, 0860 800 900, [email protected]
- Cover sold that never suited your circumstances: FAIS Ombud, 012 762 5000, [email protected]
- Poor repair workmanship: Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa, 010 590 8378
Both ombud services are free to consumers, and both will ask for the insurer written decision and your complaint reference – so obtain them before you lodge.
