POLMED’s contact number is 0860 765 633 (0860 POLMED). Members use the same number for hospital, MRI and CT scan pre-authorisation, while doctors and hospitals call 0860 104 111. Membership correspondence can be faxed to 0861 888 110, and new claims to 011 758 7660. The website and 2026 guide do not give call centre hours.
What this organisation provides
POLMED, the South African Police Service Medical Scheme, is a closed medical scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act as scheme number 374. Only SAPS employees appointed under the South African Police Service Act, and their dependants, can join. It has two options, Marine and Aquarium. Most of its service email addresses use Medscheme’s domain, medscheme.co.za.
Hospital procedures, treatment and admissions need authorisation before the event. If you do not get it, the guide says a R5 000 penalty applies. In an emergency, the member, a dependant or the hospital must tell POLMED within 24 hours or on the next business day. Emergency ambulance services must be authorised by ER24 within 72 hours, or a 40% co-payment applies. When you call for authorisation, have ready:
- your membership number and the patient’s name
- the date of admission or procedure, and the hospital
- the procedure and diagnosis, with the RPL and ICD-10 codes from your doctor
- the admitting doctor’s name and practice number
Address and operating information
The main POLMED Client Service Centre is at Shop 17, Ground Floor, Nedbank Plaza, 175 Steve Biko Street, Arcadia, Pretoria 0083. Post for claims, membership and contributions goes to POLMED, Private Bag X16, Arcadia 0007.
The contact page lists regional walk-in offices in Bloemfontein, Kathu, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Lephalale, Polokwane, Johannesburg (Mathomo Mall, Marshalltown), Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Kimberley, Mbombela, Klerksdorp, Rustenburg, Roodepoort, Mahikeng, Vereeniging and East London. It gives no phone numbers for these offices, so use 0860 765 633. The two POLMED sources give different Roodepoort addresses: Valley View Office Park on the website and Flora Centre in the 2026 guide. Call before you visit.
Support and escalation routes
- Raise the query with the Client Service Centre on 0860 765 633, by WhatsApp, by email or at a walk-in office. Keep the reference number.
- If you are unhappy with the decision, send a written complaint or appeal to polmedappeals@medscheme.co.za, or post it to Private Bag X16, Arcadia 0007. Use the dispute form on polmed.co.za. POLMED says a dispute takes at least five working days.
- If it is still unresolved, complain to the Council for Medical Schemes on 0861 123 267 or at complaints@medicalschemes.co.za, using the CMS complaint form.
