Cheap accommodation in Durban is mostly a question of which suburb and which month, not which hotel. The same room can double in price between June and December, and the beachfront charges a premium the inland suburbs a few kilometres away do not.

Winter is the cheap season, and the weather is fine
This is the single biggest saving available, and visitors from inland routinely miss it. Durban is subtropical, so its winter is mild and dry, with daytime temperatures that would pass for a pleasant spring elsewhere in the country. Rates in June and August are well below the summer peak for the same rooms.
- Most expensive: mid-December to early January, when the city fills with holidaymakers and rates roughly peak.
- Also expensive: Easter, the school holidays, and the first weekend of July, when the Durban July race weekend books out large parts of the city.
- Cheapest: mid-winter outside school holidays, and the quiet weeks of February and November.
- Midweek beats weekend almost everywhere in the city, often substantially.
If your dates are flexible, shifting by a week around a school holiday boundary usually saves more than changing hotel.
Where the cheaper rooms actually are
Durban’s price map is fairly simple once you know it.

The trade-off is transport. A cheaper Berea guest house stops being cheaper if you take a metered ride to the beach twice a day, so weigh the nightly saving against how you plan to get around.
Budget hotel brands operate in Durban
If you would rather book a chain than an independent guest house, City Lodge Hotels runs four brands at different price points across southern Africa: Courtyard Hotels at the top, then City Lodge Hotels, then Town Lodges, with Road Lodges as the budget option. The group describes itself as operating 56 properties in the region.
Book chains through the operator’s own website rather than a search result, and check the group’s own site for which brands currently have Durban properties, since portfolios change.
Backpacker lodges and self-catering flats are the other end of the budget market, and are often the cheapest option for longer stays because you are not paying for daily servicing.
Checking that a cheap listing is real
Accommodation fraud follows the bargains, because an unusually low price is what stops people asking questions. Four checks catch almost all of it.
- Find the establishment’s own website and phone it. A listing on a booking site is not proof a business is trading. Closed guest houses stay listed for years.
- Check the dialling code. Durban and its surrounds are on 031. A supposedly Durban hotel answering on a distant geographic code deserves a second look.
- Never EFT a deposit into a personal account. Confirm banking details by voice and read the account number back. Intercepted emails with swapped account numbers are the standard fraud.
- Pay by card or through the platform where you can. Both give you a dispute route that an EFT does not.
If a booking goes wrong
- Booked through a platform? Raise it with the platform first. It holds the money and runs the refund.
- Paid by card? Ask your bank about a chargeback, promptly rather than later.
- Suspect fraud? Tell your bank immediately and open a police case.
- An unresolved complaint against the establishment goes to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud on 0860 000 272, free of charge, once you have exhausted the supplier’s own process.
Under the Consumer Protection Act you may cancel an advance booking, with a reasonable cancellation fee rather than forfeiting the full amount, and a cancellation caused by death or hospitalisation cannot be charged for at all.
