Getting there from South Africa
Kasane sits in the far north of Botswana, near where four countries meet, and it is a long way from the South African border by road.
- Most visitors fly to Kasane, or arrive via Victoria Falls, which is close by across the Zimbabwean border.
- Driving means crossing into Botswana and then most of the length of the country. Treat it as at least two days, not one.
- Take the vehicle’s registration papers, plus a bank letter of authority for a financed car or an owner’s letter for a borrowed one. Cross border road charges are payable at the border, usually in cash.
- Botswana enforces veterinary controls on the movement of raw meat and dairy at cordon fences and checkpoints, and items are confiscated. Check the current rules before packing a cooler box.
- A child travelling without both parents needs supporting documents. Confirm requirements before you leave.
Health, and the difference from the Pilanesberg
This matters if you are comparing safari options. Northern Botswana, including Chobe, is a malaria area, unlike the malaria free reserves in North West province.
- Speak to a travel clinic well before you go. Prophylaxis usually has to start before travel, so this is not something to arrange the week before.
- Risk is generally higher in the wet months, but do not treat the dry season as risk free.
- Take travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation. Kasane is remote and your South African medical scheme may not cover treatment across the border.
- Tell the lodge about medical conditions and dietary needs when booking, not on arrival.
Booking terms and what protection you have
Botswana is a separate country with its own law. The Consumer Protection Act does not apply, and neither the National Consumer Commission nor the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud has jurisdiction over a booking made with a Botswana business.
- Pay by card or through an agent, so a chargeback or a dispute process stays open to you. An international transfer leaves you with neither.
- Safari deposits are large and often non refundable well ahead of travel. Get the cancellation schedule in writing before paying.
- Ask what the rate includes: park fees, drives, river cruises, drinks and transfers are treated differently by different operators.
- Confirm the billing currency. Botswana uses the pula, and quotes may be in pula, rand or US dollars.
