Common South African names are shared by many people, and a search for one returns several unrelated individuals in different provinces and different lines of work. A directory that published a number for one of them would be sending strangers to whoever happened to match.
ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We have no relationship with any individual named in a search query, and we cannot pass a message to anyone.
What you probably need instead
Almost every search for a named person is actually a search for the organisation that person works at, or for a service they provide. Both are reachable without an individual’s private line.

Verifying a person who has approached you about money
- Never verify a caller using details the caller supplied. End the call and phone the organisation on the number published on its own website.
- Never pay into a personal account. A payment to a business should go to a business account in the registered name, and a request to do otherwise is the clearest warning sign there is.
- Ask for the company registration number and check it on the CIPC register before any money moves.
- Get everything in writing before paying a deposit, including what is being supplied, when, and what happens if it is not.
- Use a payment method with recourse. A card payment can be disputed with your bank; an instant EFT to a stranger generally cannot be recovered.
Why this page carries no personal details
The rule is applied to everyone equally, whether the request comes from a member of the public, a journalist or the person themselves. Two reasons sit behind it.
- A personal number published where it ranks in search becomes an impersonation tool. The number itself is what lends a fraudulent approach credibility, and the people harmed are the ones who trusted it.
- Someone named in a search query did not ask to be listed. A directory that publishes an individual’s direct line hands strangers a channel that person never opened.
- Organisational routes are published here in full. Where a company, department or professional body publishes a contact route on its own official channels, we publish it.
- Numbers circulating on third-party sites are not republished. A number appearing elsewhere is not evidence that anyone consented to it being listed, and it is frequently wrong.

Checking a company on the public register
This is the single most useful thing you can do before paying a business you cannot otherwise verify, and it costs nothing.
- The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission keeps a public register of every registered company and close corporation in South Africa, with the registered name, the registration number, the registered address and the entity’s status.
- Status is the field that matters. An entity in business rescue, in deregistration or already deregistered is not one to pay a deposit to, and the register says which.
- A trading name is not a registered name. Businesses commonly trade under a name different from the one they are registered under, which is why an invoice and a bank account may carry a name you do not recognise.
- A sole proprietor need not be registered at all, which is lawful. In that case the person is the business, and a physical address and an identity become the only verification available.
- Ask for the number in writing before paying. A business that will not give you its registration number, or gives one that does not match the name, has told you what you need to know.
None of this helps after the money has gone. Recovery depends on whether the funds are still in the receiving account, which is a question of hours rather than days, so the check has to happen before the payment.
Complaints and escalation
Where a business is involved, raise it with the business first and then with the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud on 0860 000 272, free of charge. Where money has been taken and the recipient cannot be traced, that is a police matter: report it to the South African Police Service on 10111 and tell your bank the same day, because recovery depends on whether the funds are still in the receiving account.
