Booking through a South African office
This puts you in a better position than most cross border bookings, and it is worth understanding why.
- You are dealing with an office in Bellville rather than only with a business abroad. Ask, in writing, which entity you are contracting with and which country’s law governs it, because that determines what you can do if things go wrong.
- Do not assume South African consumer bodies can act. Whether the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud or the National Consumer Commission can help depends on who the contracting party is, and a Namibian entity is outside their reach.
- Pay by card rather than transfer, so a chargeback stays available regardless of which entity took the money.
- Confirm the billing currency. Rates for Namibian lodges are often quoted in Namibian dollars or rand, and the two are pegged but not interchangeable once you are home.
Why the location matters, and gate times
Sossusvlei is photographed at sunrise, and access is controlled by a park gate. Where you sleep decides whether you can be at the dunes for first light.
- The outer Sesriem gate and the inner gate open at different times, and lodges inside the park boundary get in earlier than those outside. Confirm what applies to your booking rather than assuming.
- The last stretch to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei needs a 4×4, or the shuttle that runs from the two wheel drive parking area. An ordinary car will get stuck in the sand.
- Start early and carry far more water than feels necessary. Daytime heat here is severe and there is no shade on the dunes.
- Fuel stops are very far apart. Fill up whenever you can, and treat gravel road distances as taking much longer than the kilometres suggest.
- Most punctures on this route happen on gravel. Check that your hire vehicle has a usable spare and the tools before leaving the tar.
Cancellation and deposits
Lodges in this region book out far ahead in high season and take substantial non refundable deposits. Get the cancellation schedule in writing at the time of booking, and consider travel insurance that covers cancellation, because the terms are stricter than a city hotel’s and the trip is usually expensive.
