The number tells you who runs it
Tembisa is a clean illustration of the split that confuses people across all of Gauteng.
- 011 999 is the City of Ekurhuleni. Its municipal clinics nearly all use that prefix. Service questions and complaints about them go to the City.
- 011 923 is the provincial hospital. Complaints about it go to the Gauteng Department of Health.
- Phoning the wrong one is the usual reason people get transferred in circles. Check the prefix before you dial, and say whether you mean the clinic or the hospital.
Tembisa is not Temba
Tembisa is in Ekurhuleni, with 011 numbers. Temba is in Hammanskraal in the City of Tshwane, with 012 numbers. Themba Hospital is a third place again, in Mpumalanga, with 013 numbers. Directory listings do merge these: we found one during this work that put an Ekurhuleni number and a Tembisa street address under the heading “Temba”.
Where to go after hours
Tembisa Main Clinic keeps weekday hours. Esangweni Section is one of only nine City of Ekurhuleni community health centres open around the clock, and it is in Tembisa itself, so you do not have to leave the township to be seen at night.
A 24 hour community health centre is still not an emergency unit. For anything serious, an ambulance and the hospital remain the right call. But for something that cannot wait until morning and does not need casualty, it is the correct destination.
Getting into the hospital
Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital sits at the top of the local chain and takes referrals rather than walk-ins, except in an emergency. Start at the clinic, which handles routine consultations, chronic medicine, immunisation, family planning and antenatal care, and which writes the referral letter the hospital will ask for.
Bring your identity document, clinic card and hospital file number, referral letter, current medicines in their packaging, and proof of income. Fees are means-tested, with pregnant women and children under six treated free of charge.
Complaints
Raise it at the facility and get a written reference number, then take it to whoever runs that facility: the City for the clinic or health centre, the Gauteng Department of Health for the hospital. If unresolved, the Health Ombud on 080 911 6472 investigates the standard of care at any health establishment. Conduct by a named nurse or doctor goes to the South African Nursing Council or the HPCSA.
