A complaint about something a newspaper published goes to the Press Council, and it is free. You do not need a lawyer, and the remedy is usually a correction or an apology given similar prominence to the original.

Complaining about coverage
- Raise it with the editor first, in writing, quoting the date and headline. Many complaints are resolved at that stage.
- Complain promptly. The Press Council has a time limit for lodging.
- Be specific about what is inaccurate, and provide the correct information. A complaint that the tone was unfair is much harder to sustain than one showing a fact is wrong.
- The Press Code covers accuracy, fairness, privacy and the protection of children, and members are bound by it.
Placing notices and advertising
Some legal processes require publication in a newspaper, including certain estate, liquidation and name-change notices. The requirement usually specifies the circulation area and the language, so check the exact wording of the requirement before booking, because a notice placed in the wrong publication has to be paid for twice.
Get the rate, the publication date and the proof in writing, and keep the tear sheet or the electronic proof of publication. That is what you will be asked for later.
