The Riversdale traffic department is run by Hessequa Municipality, which covers Riversdale, Albertinia, Heidelberg, Stilbaai, Witsand, Gouritsmond, Slangrivier and Jongensfontein. It publishes different numbers for different counters, so which line you dial depends on whether you are licensing, registering a vehicle or reporting something.
Official contact channels
- Traffic department, general: 028 713 7817
- Licensing and general enquiries: 028 713 7821, 028 713 8101 or 028 713 7963
- Motor vehicle registration: 028 713 7817 or 028 713 7818
- Operations, staffed around the clock: 028 713 7917
- Municipal switchboard: 028 713 8000
- Municipal email: [email protected]
The operations line is the one that runs outside office hours. Licensing and registration counters keep office hours only, so a call to those numbers in the evening will not be answered even though the department has a 24-hour line.
Services and responsibilities
- Learner and driving licence testing, renewals and temporary licences
- Professional driving permits
- Motor vehicle registration and licensing
- Roadworthy testing
- Traffic fine payment and traffic law enforcement across the Hessequa area
Bring the originals of your identity document and proof of residence, and expect the roadworthy and licensing counters to work to booking slots rather than to a walk-in queue. Phoning ahead to book is the difference between a morning and a wasted trip, particularly in the December holiday period when the coastal towns fill up.
Office and address information
- Traffic department: Mulder Street, Riversdale, 6670
- Office hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 15:30
- The municipal Civic Centre is separately located in Van den Berg Street, Riversdale
- Postal address: PO Box 29, Riversdale, 6670
- Municipal emergency number: 084 014 1828
Do not confuse the two Riversdale addresses. Rates, water and general municipal business are handled at the Civic Centre in Van den Berg Street; licensing, registration and roadworthy testing happen at the traffic department in Mulder Street.
Applications and escalation
- Fines can be paid in person, by direct transfer, or through the PayCity service the municipality points to
- Proof of payment for fines is submitted to [email protected], the municipality nominated processing address
- Pay or contest a fine before the court date printed on the notice; a missed date turns a fine into a warrant
- Service complaints the department does not resolve go to the municipality on 028 713 8000 or [email protected]
- Maladministration by a municipality can be taken to the Public Protector
- Vehicle registration and licence records are held on the national NaTIS system, administered by the Road Traffic Management Corporation
If you want to contest rather than pay, make a written representation to the issuing authority before the court date rather than simply ignoring the notice. Representations are considered on their merits; silence is not, and the matter escalates on its own timetable regardless of whether you think the fine was fair.
