Read this before you pay anyone. Searching the National Credit Regulator register of debt counsellors returns no registered debt counsellor trading as Alpha Debt Management.
The closest match on the register is Alpha Debt Counselling, registration number NCRDC762, which appears under voluntary cancellations. Its registration was cancelled on 26 March 2012, with the reason recorded as no longer involved with debt counselling. That business has not been a registered debt counsellor for well over a decade.
Official contact channels
- National Credit Regulator: 0860 627 627
- NCR register of debt counsellors: published at ncr.org.za under register of registrants
- The register has four separate lists: Registered, Voluntary Cancelled, Cancelled by Tribunal and Registration Lapsed
- You can search it by name or by NCRDC registration number
- The NCR also runs a debt help service at ncrdebthelp.co.za
Check which of the four lists a name appears on, not merely whether it appears. A counsellor can be listed and still be cancelled, and the cancelled lists carry the date and the reason.
What this organisation provides
- Debt counselling is a regulated activity under the National Credit Act
- Only a person registered with the NCR as a debt counsellor may offer it
- A registered counsellor assesses whether you are over-indebted and can apply to court to restructure your debts
- While under debt review you are protected from legal action by credit providers on the listed debts
- Fees are prescribed by regulation rather than set freely by the counsellor
Because the fees are prescribed, a quote that is far above the regulated schedule is itself a warning sign. So is any request for a large payment before an application has been lodged.
Address and operating information
- No current physical address can be given for an entity that is not on the registered list
- The cancelled Alpha Debt Counselling entry was recorded in Grahamstown, now Makhanda, in the Eastern Cape
- A cancelled registration means the business may no longer accept new debt review clients
- If you were previously under debt review with a counsellor who deregistered, your case should have been transferred
- Your credit providers and the NCR can confirm who currently holds your debt review
If you believe you are under debt review but cannot reach your counsellor, do not simply stop paying. Contact the NCR, establish who is administering the arrangement, and keep paying into the correct account in the meantime, because arrears can end the protection debt review gives you.
Support and escalation routes
- Verify any debt counsellor on the NCR register before signing or paying anything
- Complaints about a debt counsellor or credit provider: the NCR on 0860 627 627
- Disputes about a credit agreement: the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900
- Debt review matters can also be referred to the National Consumer Tribunal
- Never pay an upfront fee to an unregistered person promising to clear or consolidate your debt
Dealing with an unregistered operator costs you the protections the Act provides. An application by someone who is not a registered debt counsellor carries no standing at court, and money paid to them is rarely recoverable.
