First for Women does not publish a separate cancellation number. A cancellation goes through the customer service line for the type of policy you hold, and short-term cover and life cover are handled by different teams on different numbers. Using the wrong one is the usual reason a cancellation takes longer than it should.

Official provider route

Cancelling a policy

  • Call the service line for your product and ask for the cancellation to be logged, then ask for a reference number before you end the call
  • Ask for the effective date of the cancellation and the date the last debit order will run. A cancellation logged mid-month does not always stop that month collection
  • Ask for written confirmation by email. A verbal cancellation with no reference is the hardest thing to prove later if a premium is still collected
  • Do not simply stop the debit order at your bank. The policy stays on the books, arrear premiums can be raised, and cover may lapse rather than being cancelled cleanly
  • Ask whether a cooling-off period still applies to your policy, which depends on the product and how recently it started

Before you cancel

  • Check whether the cover is tied to something else, such as a vehicle finance agreement or a bond, which may require you to hold insurance
  • Confirm whether any add-ons cancel with the main policy or separately, including tyre and rim cover, scratch and dent, car warranty, portable possessions and cellphone or laptop cover
  • If you are replacing the cover, line up the new policy start date against the cancellation date so you are never uninsured for a day
  • If you have an open claim, ask how cancelling affects it before you confirm

Escalation route

  • If a cancellation is not actioned or a premium is taken after the agreed date, use the First for Women complaints line on 0860 22 21 78 or email disputeresolution@firstforwomen.co.za, quoting your cancellation reference
  • If the complaint is still unresolved, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles insurance disputes on 0860 800 900 once the insurer has had a chance to respond
  • To report suspected fraud on a policy, First for Women publishes a fraud hotline on 0861 11 56 53
