Watch for one outdated number. First for Women’s blog guide on submitting a claim still tells readers to phone 0861 11 18 05, but the current Contact Us page labels that number as the life insurance claims line. For a car or home claim, use 0861 33 93 39. The contact page’s FAQ also mentions 0861 00 55 85 and gives Saturday support as 09:00 to 13:00, which differs from its own hours table. First for Women does not publish a WhatsApp claims number.
What you need before contacting
- Your policy number, which First for Women asks you to have on hand whenever you follow up a claim.
- The date of the incident. Claims should reach the insurer as soon as possible and no later than 30 days after the event; its car theft guide says later claims cannot be processed.
- A police case number, needed after a vehicle accident or when someone’s property was damaged. For a stolen car, ask the officer for a certified copy of the report and note their name and position.
- Supporting documents, including the police report if you have one.
- Your policy book and schedule, to check what you are covered for and which excess applies.
Step-by-step contact process
- Get help first. After an accident or breakdown, call 0860 10 42 12 or request assistance in the 1st for Women App, available on Google Play, Apple and AppGallery.
- If the car was stolen, contact your tracking company to activate the device, then report the theft at a police station, including any dents or modifications that identify the car.
- Tell First for Women on 0861 33 93 39 within 30 days. Its guide says to report an incident even if you do not plan to claim, because it helps with any future claim.
- Send the documents the claims team asks for. You receive a claim number and a consultant who updates you on progress.
- Each time you call, ask for a reference number and write down the consultant’s name and surname.
- Wait for authorisation before any repair. First for Women warns that repairs done without it can get the claim rejected, and says repairs or replacements should happen within three months of the claim being settled.
The 1st for Women App bundles Guardian on Call safety features, which the insurer says depend on your plan: mobile crash detection that raises help automatically, one-tap 24/7 support from armed response, police and fire and rescue, live location sharing, and roadside help with breakdowns, flat batteries, burst tyres and empty tanks. It also offers assessment and claims support. Policy changes are handled by phone or through your 1st for Women online profile. To cancel a policy rather than claim, see our First for Women cancellation page below.
Escalation route
- Go back to the consultant handling your claim first, with the claim number and the references you noted.
- If the outcome is still wrong, lodge a complaint on 0860 22 21 78 or at disputeresolution@firstforwomen.co.za.
- If First for Women does not resolve it, the free external route for car and home insurance disputes is the National Financial Ombud Scheme (it absorbed the former short-term insurance ombud) on 0860 800 900 or info@nfosa.co.za.
The insurer behind these policies, First for Women Insurance Company Limited (FSP 15261), is based at Auto & General Park, 1 Telesure Lane, Riverglen, Dainfern, 2191. Its postal address is PO Box 11250, Johannesburg, 2000.
