If VVM has contacted you about money owed, it is Van de Venter Mojapelo (Pty) Ltd, a debt recovery firm in Randburg that has operated since 1993. It collects on behalf of other organisations, so the debt belongs to someone else, and VVM’s site lists a separate WhatsApp line labelled SABC. If VVM contacts you

  • Ask which creditor the debt is for, the account or reference number, and the amount broken down into capital, interest and costs
  • Ask for that in writing before you agree to anything
  • Pay only through the payment details VVM gives through its own published channels, and never into a personal account suggested in a call or message
  • If you believe you do not owe the money, say so in writing to info@vvm.co.za and keep a copy

Scammers use the names of real debt collectors. Call 011 329 8500 yourself, rather than calling back a number that contacted you, if you are unsure whether a demand is genuine.

Support and escalation routes

Debt collectors in South Africa must be registered with the Council for Debt Collectors, which also handles complaints about collectors’ conduct. Quote VVM’s registration number, 0013148/05, in any complaint. A dispute about whether the underlying debt is valid is usually one to take up with the original creditor as well as the collector.
