Official SRD appeal route

If SASSA declined your SRD application, SASSA’s SRD site says you appeal with the Department of Social Development. The appeal platform at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/ sends your appeal to ITSAA, which considers it in terms of section 18 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004, together with the SRD Regulations.

For help with an appeal, contact ITSAA on 012 312 7727 or grantappeals@dsd.gov.za. SASSA’s regional office numbers are not appeal lines.

Before appealing, you can ask SASSA to reconsider its decision on the SRD site at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/reconsideration, where you can also check your reconsideration status.

What you need before contacting

  • Your South African ID number.
  • The phone number you used to submit your SRD application. If that number has changed, call the SASSA call centre on 0800 601 011 to update it.
  • The month or months your application was rejected. You must lodge an appeal for each rejected month, and the Tribunal’s decision applies only to that month.

The appeal app says you may appeal “within a period of 30 days but not exceeding 90 days” after SASSA’s decision, so do not wait too long.

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Optional first step: request a reconsideration on SASSA’s SRD site and check the Reconsideration Status there.
  2. Open the appeal platform at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/ and enter your SA ID number and the phone number you used to apply.
  3. Check that the information shown from your SASSA application is complete and correct. Update your contact information through the link provided if needed.
  4. After updating, click “Save”. You are sent back to the appeal site.
  5. Confirm that you have read and accepted the Declaration and Consent documents.
  6. Click “Submit” and wait for the confirmation message. Repeat for every rejected month.
  7. Check your appeal status on the same site. The outcome is sent to you electronically.

The Tribunal aims to finalise appeals within 60 to 90 days. It re-checks the databases, including bank verification of insufficient means, and the app states an income threshold of R350 per person per month.

Escalation route

The Tribunal’s decision is final. The only further route is a judicial review in the High Court under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA), within 180 days. For a question about an appeal that is still open, contact ITSAA on 012 312 7727, email grantappeals@dsd.gov.za, or write to ITSAA, Private Bag x 901, Pretoria, 0001.

For other government services, see the government hub or the government directory S listings.
