How to change your SRD banking details
- Open srd.sassa.gov.za and click “click here to proceed” under South African ID Holders (asylum seekers and special permit holders use the second option).
- Under “How can I change my Banking details”, click “click here to change your Banking details”.
- Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and tap “send pin”.
- SASSA sends an SMS with a one-time PIN to the mobile number you used when you applied. Enter the PIN and follow the instructions.
- Choose to be paid into a bank account or by money transfer through a major bank, and enter the new details.
SASSA’s banking details page sets three rules. The bank account must be in your own name, because SASSA cannot pay your grant into another person’s account. If you choose a cellphone money transfer, the phone number that received the SMS must be registered in your name. And new banking details are only used for future payments, after SASSA has verified them, so a payment already processed will still go to the old details. The page describes the service as for approved beneficiaries of the SRD R370 grant.
If the PIN goes to an old number
The banking details update only works if you still have the cellphone number linked to your SRD application, because that is where the PIN is sent. If your number has changed, update it first. SASSA’s SRD home page says to call the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11 if the number you want feedback on is not the one used to lodge the application, and the portal also has a “change your Mobile Number” page. That page first verifies you are the original applicant, asking for your ID number, the reason for the change and your current payment option.
SRD status: “bank details pending”
SASSA’s SRD status guide, published on the portal, explains what each status means. “Bank details pending” means SASSA received your application or reapplication but no banking details or payment preference, so you need to submit them on the website. “Approved” for a month means you qualified, and the pay day field shows when money will be paid; if it is blank, no payment has been processed yet. “Declined” gives the reason, and you can appeal each declined month through the Department of Social Development. Check your status at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status. The status guide still refers to the grant by its earlier R350 amount, but the status names and the links it gives match the current portal.
SASSA SRD helpline and email
For anything the SRD portal cannot fix, SASSA’s published channels are the toll-free call centre on 0800 60 10 11 and GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za. SASSA notes on its Services Portal that the call is free from a landline but may cost airtime from a cellphone. SASSA does not publish a WhatsApp number for SRD, so do not send your ID number, PIN or bank details to WhatsApp numbers or social media accounts claiming to be SASSA, and never share the one-time PIN SASSA sends you. SASSA’s only official SRD website is srd.sassa.gov.za.
Who can get the SRD grant
The SRD portal says the grant is for South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers and special permit holders aged 18 to 60 who have insufficient means, do not receive another social grant for themselves, are not contributing to or eligible for UIF, and have no other financial support. All information is given electronically, with no documents to upload, and applicants must accept SASSA’s declaration and consent documents.
