Check your car against the manufacturer’s recall list by VIN. Safety recalls are repaired free of charge regardless of the car’s age or how many owners it has had, and a used car bought privately may have an outstanding one nobody told you about.

Servicing and your warranty
- You may service your car anywhere, using an independent workshop and suitable parts, without automatically voiding the warranty. That right comes from the Consumer Protection Act.
- Keep every invoice and stamp the book. The burden of showing the car was properly maintained falls on you.
- A service plan and a warranty are different products with different expiry points. Know both dates.
- Get a written quote before authorising work, and require a call before any extra work is done.
If a new or used car is defective
Goods must be of good quality and free of defects, and there is a six-month window in which you may return defective goods for repair, replacement or refund, with the choice being yours rather than the dealer’s.
Put the complaint in writing early and keep the dates. A repeated fault returned repeatedly for repair is a stronger case than a single complaint made late.
