Absa runs a My Financial Adviser section on its website, but it publishes no single adviser telephone number. Advice is arranged through the product area you need, so the right number depends on what you are actually asking about.
The numbers Absa publishes for advice-related areas
- Savings and Investments products: 0860 111 515
- Private Banking: 0860 553 553
- AIFA, as Absa labels it: +27 11 225 1797
- Absa Trusts: 0861 238 886
- Wills Direct: 0860 627 775
- Estate Intake Centre: 0860 110 287
- General enquiries: 08600 08600
Pick by the thing you want done. An investment question is Savings and Investments; a will is Wills Direct; winding up a deceased estate is the Estate Intake Centre, which is a different desk from Absa Trusts.
Check the adviser is authorised before you take advice
This is the single most useful thing you can do. Financial advice in South Africa is a regulated activity under FAIS, and a person giving it must be a representative of an authorised Financial Services Provider. Absa Bank Limited, registration 1986/004794/06, is an authorised FSP and a registered credit provider under NCRCP7 — but the individual matters too.
- Ask for the adviser’s full name and the FSP number of the entity they represent.
- Ask which product categories they are authorised to advise on. An adviser authorised for long-term insurance is not thereby authorised for collective investments.
- Verify it on the FSCA’s own register, not on a card or a website.
You are entitled to a record of advice
Under FAIS an adviser must give you a record of advice setting out what you told them about your circumstances, what was recommended and why, and what the alternatives were. You are also entitled to disclosure of how the adviser is paid — commission, a fee, or both, and how much. If you did not get either document, ask for them in writing before you sign anything. They are the evidence if the advice later turns out to have been wrong.
Questions worth asking in the meeting
- What are the total costs, expressed as a percentage a year, including the platform, the fund and the advice fee?
- What are the penalties if I stop, reduce or transfer this in year two?
- Are you recommending an in-house Absa product, and were you shown alternatives outside the group?
- What happens to my ongoing service if you leave?
An adviser is not the same as a call centre agent
The general enquiries and product numbers above are administration lines. The people who answer them can transact but may not advise, and a recommendation from someone not authorised to make one leaves you without recourse. If you want advice, ask specifically to be referred to an authorised financial adviser and get the appointment on record.
If advice goes wrong
A complaint about financial advice — unsuitable product, undisclosed commission, no record of advice — goes to the FAIS Ombud, which is free to consumers and deals specifically with advice rather than with service. Complain to Absa first and keep the reference, then take it there. A banking service complaint, by contrast, goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme.
