Absa publishes no telephone number or mailbox for a home loans legal department. Where a bond has moved into legal proceedings, the attorney firm named on your papers is the contact, and the bank routes everything else through home loans or complaints.

Task scope

This covers letters of demand, summonses and judgments on a home loan, and requests for documents where a bond is in dispute or in arrears.

Requirements

If you have received a legal document, the attorney firm acting for Absa is named on it with a reference number, and that reference is what identifies the file. Once a matter sits with external attorneys the bank usually cannot discuss or settle it directly.

Steps

If the account is in arrears but not yet in litigation, the Manage my debt route on 0860 000 786 is the one Absa publishes for restructuring, and acting before legal steps begin is what keeps the options open. International mortgages are handled separately on +27 11 501 5072 or [email protected].

Escalation

A complaint about the bank goes to the Complaint Resolution Suite, open weekdays 08:00 to 16:30, then to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 for banking conduct, or the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 for the credit agreement, including a reckless lending claim. Neither can set aside a court order. Note that 0860 557 557 on the same contact page is the fraud hotline and is not a legal or collections route.
