There is no credit bureau called ITC. The name survives in everyday speech, where people still talk about being blacklisted on ITC or needing ITC clearance, but no entity of that name appears anywhere on the National Credit Regulator register of credit bureaus, which currently runs to thirty registered bureaus across three pages. The TransUnion website does not use the name either. If you are trying to check or correct a credit record, the contacts below are the ones that actually exist.
Official contact channels
These are the consumer-facing bureaus on the NCR register, with the details each has filed with the regulator:
- TransUnion Credit Bureau, registration NCRCB4: 086 148 2435
- Experian South Africa, registration NCRCB16: 086 110 5665, and [email protected]
- Xpert Decision Systems, known as XDS, registration NCRCB5: 011 645 9100
- TPN Group, registration NCRCB8: 086 187 6000
- Consumer Profile Bureau, registration NCRCB2: 010 590 9505, and [email protected]
- National Credit Regulator call centre: 0860 627 627, or 011 554 2700
- National Credit Regulator complaints: [email protected]
Several bureaus file a named employee as their register contact rather than a department mailbox. Those are deliberately not reproduced here, because they change with the post and a message to a departed official goes nowhere. Where a bureau publishes a role mailbox, it appears in the list above.
What this organisation provides
A credit bureau holds a record of how you have handled credit. It receives data from credit providers, compiles it into a credit report and a score, and sells access to that record to lenders assessing an application. It does not lend money and it does not decide whether you get credit; it supplies the information the lender uses to decide.
Under the National Credit Act you are entitled to a free credit report once a year from each registered bureau, and several publish a dedicated consumer route for it. Experian does so at experian.co.za, XDS through splendi.co.za, and TPN Group at tpn.co.za.
The structure of the register explains why the word blacklist misleads people. There are thirty separately registered bureaus, each holding its own record built from its own data feeds. There is no single national list to be removed from, and a correction accepted by one bureau does not automatically reach the others. If an entry is wrong, it has to be disputed at each bureau that holds it, which is why checking more than one report is worth the effort.
Address and operating information
- TransUnion Credit Bureau: 9th and 10th Floors, 11 Alice Lane, Sandton, 2196
- Xpert Decision Systems: Atrium on 5th, 5th Street, Sandton, Johannesburg, 2196
- TPN Group: First Floor, South Wing, 345 Rivonia Road, Rivonia, Sandton, 2191
- Consumer Profile Bureau: Bureau Place, Turnberry Office Park, 48 Grosvenor Road, Bryanston, Johannesburg, 2021
Those are the addresses filed with the regulator, and they are head offices rather than consumer counters. Almost all bureau business runs by phone or online, and arriving in person is rarely the faster route. Check before travelling, because a bureau is under no obligation to offer walk-in consumer support at a registered address.
Support and escalation routes
Start with the bureau that holds the entry you are disputing, not with the regulator. Get your report first so you know which bureau carries what, then raise the specific entry with that bureau and ask it to investigate. Keep the reference number and the date.
If the bureau does not resolve it, the National Credit Regulator is the next step, on 0860 627 627 or at [email protected]. The NCR registers and supervises every bureau in the list above, which is why its register is also the place to check whether an organisation claiming to hold your credit record is entitled to. Where the dispute is really with the bank or credit provider that supplied the data rather than with the bureau reporting it, the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa takes credit complaints on share call 0860 800 900 or at [email protected].
One warning is worth more than any number on this page. Be wary of anyone offering to clear your name or remove a listing for a fee. A correct listing cannot lawfully be removed because you paid someone to ask, and disputing an incorrect one costs nothing at the bureau itself. The people charging for it are selling you a process you are entitled to run yourself for free.
