Nedbank issues American Express cards in South Africa and publishes four separate Amex lines rather than one. Which you need depends on the exact card you hold, and they are not interchangeable: two of the four share a local number but route differently from abroad. If the card is lost or stolen, none of the four is the right call, because that has its own line and it runs at all hours.
Official provider route
- Amex Credit Card: 0860 119 966, or 010 217 4736 from outside South Africa
- Amex Platinum Services: 0800 004 244, or 010 217 4735 from outside South Africa
- Amex Corporate Gold Card: 0860 102 191, or 010 217 4736 from outside South Africa
- Amex Corporate Green Card: 0860 102 191, or 010 217 4750 from outside South Africa
- Lost and stolen cards, all hours: 0800 110 929, or 010 217 4330 from outside South Africa
- Nedbank Contact Centre, tollfree and 24 hours: 0800 555 111
The two corporate cards share the local number 0860 102 191 but split on the international one, 010 217 4736 for Gold and 010 217 4750 for Green. Nedbank publishes that same 0860 102 191 for its Corporate Purchasing Card as well, so three different products sit behind one local number. Say which card you are holding when the line answers rather than assuming the number has already identified it.
Platinum Services is the only one of the four on a tollfree 0800 number. The rest are 0860 share call lines, which are charged at a local rate rather than free.
Product or service support
The four lines divide along a simple line: two personal and two corporate. The Amex Credit Card and Amex Platinum Services lines serve cards issued to an individual, while the Corporate Gold and Corporate Green lines serve cards issued under a company agreement. Calling the consumer line about a corporate card, or the reverse, is the most common reason for being transferred.
Two adjacent lines on the same Nedbank page are frequently mistaken for Amex lines and are not. Merchants accepting card payments have their own number on 0860 114 966, or 010 217 4005 from abroad, which is for businesses taking payment rather than for cardholders making it. The SAA Voyager Credit Card is a separate product again on 0861 263 464, or 010 217 4213 from abroad, and is not an American Express card.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
Have the card physically in front of you before calling. The card type printed on it is what determines the correct line, and the first thing you will be asked for is the card number, which no line can proceed without.
A corporate card is issued under an agreement with the company rather than with you personally, and that changes what you can ask for. Requests that alter the facility, such as a limit change or a closure, ordinarily run through whoever administers the card programme at the company rather than through the cardholder. The corporate lines exist precisely because those decisions are not the cardholders to make.
For anything concerning the underlying account rather than the card itself, the general Nedbank Contact Centre on 0800 555 111 is the better route, and it runs 24 hours where the card lines do not publish their hours at all.
Escalation route
One thing does not wait for any process. If the card is lost, stolen or being used without your consent, call 0800 110 929 immediately, at any hour, and block it before doing anything else. A complaint can be lodged afterwards; a card left live cannot be un-spent.
For everything else, work up in order: the Amex line for your card type, then the Nedbank Contact Centre on 0800 555 111, then the Client Complaints Helpline on 0860 444 000, or +27 11 710 4011 if you are calling from outside South Africa. Nedbank head office is Nedbank Group Limited, 135 Rivonia Road, Sandown, 2196, on +27 10 224 8000, though a card dispute will be routed back down rather than resolved there.
Where Nedbank has given its final answer and the matter is still unresolved, a banking complaint goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa on share call 0860 800 900 or at [email protected]. Keep the reference number from each call, because the ombud will ask when you first raised it and with whom.
