Nedbank’s wording is specific: if you need help joining Greenbacks, call 0800 555 111 or visit your nearest branch. There is no separate Greenbacks call centre number.
What Greenbacks costs and who gets it free
- R35 a month for existing Nedbank clients.
- Free if you have a MiGoals Plus, MiGoals Premium or Private Clients bundled account.
- You join on the Money app or Online Banking if you already bank with Nedbank and have an eligible transactional account.
- If you are not a Nedbank client, you open an eligible transactional account first and then link it to Greenbacks.
Greenbacks is a loyalty programme attached to your card rather than a card in its own right, which is why the “Greenbacks credit card” is really a Greenbacks-linked debit or credit card, most often the American Express one.

The earn rate depends on your Greenbacks level, and Nedbank says the programme now works on levels you move up by hitting set goals. Its published tips for earning more are to bank on the app or online, pay by card instead of withdrawing cash, set up debit orders for loan repayments, and meet savings and investment goals.
How to redeem
- Withdraw Greenbacks as cash at any Nedbank ATM using your Greenbacks SHOP Card.
- Redeem them on the Money app.
- Spend them with the SHOP Card at stores that accept American Express.
- Use them towards gadgets and other purchases on Avo SuperShop.
Nedbank runs a rewards calculator, a FAQ section and how-to guides for Greenbacks on its site, which answer most level and earn-rate questions faster than the call centre can.
The card behind the rewards
The Greenbacks-linked American Express card is a Nedbank credit card, so the ordinary card terms apply to it: a minimum repayment of 5% of the outstanding balance, up to 55 interest-free days depending on the card, a budget facility for paying purchases off over time, and the option to change your credit limit on request or apply to increase it.
On the Amex side, Nedbank publishes Membership Rewards as well: one point for every R5 of eligible spend, with no cap on what you can earn, points that do not expire, and the option to pay with points or withdraw them as cash at an ATM. Card management, including blocking, freezing and unfreezing, virtual cards and payment-app linking, is done in the Money app or Online Banking.
Before you call
- Check whether your query is about the rewards programme or about the card account itself; they are answered by different teams on different numbers.
- Have your Greenbacks level to hand, since several benefits only start at Level 3.
- For a missing earn, note the merchant, the date, the amount and which card you paid with. In-store versus online matters at Checkers, and SHOP Card payments are excluded from the bp benefit.
