Card authorisation is the split second in which the bank approves or declines a transaction. Nedbank runs it around the clock and does not publish a separate authorisation desk for cardholders: the number depends on whether you are the cardholder or the merchant taking the payment.

Which line to use

  • Cardholder, card declined or blocked, 24 hours: 0800 555 111
  • Merchant, for authorisation on a transaction you are taking, all hours: 0860 114 966, or +27 10 217 4005 from outside South Africa
  • Card lost, stolen or being used fraudulently: 0800 110 929, or +27 10 217 4330 from abroad
  • Nedbank lists the card lines as available all hours, which matters because declines happen at tills and airports rather than in office time
  • A corporate Amex card is a different desk, on 0860 102 191

Why a card gets declined

  • The commonest reasons are not fraud: insufficient available balance, a limit already used, an expired card, or the wrong PIN entered too often
  • Foreign and online transactions may be blocked by your own settings. In the Money app you can switch international, online and tap payments on and off yourself, which is faster than phoning
  • A large or unusual purchase can trip the fraud rules. That is the system working, and a single call clears it
  • Declines abroad are often the card network, not the bank. Try a different terminal before assuming the card is blocked

Before you travel

  • Check your international transaction setting is on, and that your card does not expire mid-trip
  • Save +27 10 217 4330 in your phone. A local 0800 number will not dial from abroad, which is exactly when you need it
  • Carry a second card from a different bank, kept separately. A single blocked card is an inconvenience, a single stolen wallet is not
  • Never read your card number, CVV or an OTP to someone who phoned you. Nedbank will not ask for them, and no genuine authorisation call ever requires an OTP from you

If a transaction was not yours

  • Phone 0800 110 929 immediately and have the card stopped. Liability runs until it is
  • Dispute the transaction in writing as well, with the date, amount and merchant, and get a reference. Chargeback windows are short
  • Unresolved complaints go to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900, or WhatsApp 066 473 0157
