Smeg South Africa splits its contact details in two, and getting the right one first saves a call. The head office in Bryanston handles the commercial side. Repairs, spares and the outlet store are run from a separate service centre in Sandton with its own number and its own mailbox.

Official contact channels

An appliance fault, a warranty claim or a request for a technician goes to the service centre number, not to the head office. A part that you intend to fit yourself goes to the spares address, which is separate again. The website also carries a service request form, which creates a written record of the fault and the date, and that record is worth having if a warranty period is close to expiring.

One address on the site is not a South African one. The professional and laboratory line is answered from Italy on an address ending in smeg.it, so a query about domestic appliances sent there will be slower rather than faster.

What this organisation provides

The brand covers domestic appliances, built in ovens, hobs, dishwashers and refrigeration, along with the retro styled small appliances it is best known for. There is a separate professional and instruments side covering catering equipment and laboratory washer disinfectors, which is a different business from the kitchen range and is not supported by the same team.

Address and operating information

The Bryanston head office and the Linbro Park service centre are roughly fifteen kilometres apart on opposite sides of Sandton, so check which one you need before setting out. The Linbro Park site is also the outlet store, so it is the address to use if you are collecting rather than enquiring. A dealer and store locator on the site lists retailers, which are independent businesses rather than branches of Smeg.

Support and escalation routes

Keep the invoice and the model and serial number, because a warranty claim will not move without them and the serial plate is usually behind the door or under the appliance. Under the Consumer Protection Act there is a six month period after delivery in which a defective product may be returned for repair, replacement or refund, and it is the consumer who chooses which of the three, not the supplier. A repair itself then carries its own three month warranty on the work and the parts.

Note where you bought it. If the appliance came from a retailer, the retailer is the supplier and shares responsibility with the brand, so you are not obliged to deal only with Smeg. If a dispute cannot be resolved, appliances fall under the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud on 0860 000 272, with the National Consumer Commission above it.
