This is the part most listings leave out, and it is the reason a phone call here often goes nowhere. A place of safety is where a child in need of care and protection is placed under the Children’s Act, usually after removal from home by a designated social worker or a police official, and always subject to a children’s court.

If your child has been placed here
A removal is not the end of the matter, and parents frequently do not realise how much the law gives them. These are rights, not favours.

- You are entitled to be at that hearing and to be heard. Ask the social worker for the court date, the court, and the case number, in writing.

- A placement is not permanent by default. Court orders are time limited and must be reviewed, and reunification with the family is the stated goal wherever it is safe.
- Contact with your child is a separate question from the placement. Ask the social worker what contact the order allows rather than assuming it is barred.
Deal with the assigned social worker and keep a written record of every conversation, including names and dates. If you cannot get answers, escalate to their supervisor at the Gauteng Department of Social Development, then to the provincial office.

The two numbers come from the same government service and do not match, which usually means one list was updated and the other was not. Try 012 790 2891 first, since it appears on the dedicated special schools list, then the other.
