Post Office customer services are on 0860 111 502, with head office on 012 407 7000. Check the Brackenfell branch is trading before you go. If the Post Office is not resolving something, the postal sector has a regulator, and most people do not know that.
ContactDetails.co.za is an independent directory. We are not the Post Office or its regulator, and we cannot resolve a complaint for you.

Escalating beyond the Post Office
Complain to the Post Office first and get a reference, because every route above it will ask what the Post Office said. After that, there are two escalation paths people rarely use.
- The postal sector is regulated by ICASA, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa. Complaints about postal services fall within its remit, which is worth knowing when a complaint stalls.
- The Public Protector investigates maladministration by state organs, and the Post Office is a state owned entity. This suits systemic failures rather than a single lost parcel.
- Complain in writing and keep everything. Dates, reference numbers, tracking numbers and names. A complaint without a paper trail rarely goes anywhere.
- If a retailer used the Post Office to deliver something you bought, pursue the retailer as well. Under the Consumer Protection Act the seller is responsible for delivering what you paid for.
When to stop using the Post Office for something
A practical judgement rather than a complaint. Some things are now better done elsewhere, and knowing which saves a wasted trip to Brackenfell or anywhere else.
- Time critical or valuable items. A courier gives you a tracked, contractual service with a service level, which ordinary mail does not.
- Anything you cannot replace. Original documents, certificates and identity documents are worth handing over in person or sending by a tracked service.
- Where a body offers an online or in person alternative, use it. Many notices and payments that once went by post now have digital channels.
- Where formal service is required by law, registered post is often specified, so it remains the right choice. Do not substitute a courier without checking what the rule requires.
