Claiming from the Unemployment Insurance Fund is free, and there is a deadline after your employment ends. Leaving it for later is the single most common reason people lose the benefit entirely. Nobody may charge you to lodge a claim.

What the employer must give you

Without these the claim stalls, and the employer is obliged to provide them.

• The declaration of your employment and earnings, which is what the fund uses to calculate the benefit.
• A certificate of service, which every departing employee is entitled to.
• Payslips and your final payment, including leave that was not taken.
• Deductions that were made must actually have been paid over, and a failure to do so is a matter for an inspector.

More than unemployment

The fund also pays maternity, parental, illness and dependants’ benefits, and the maternity benefit can be claimed without the job ending. Domestic workers are covered, and so are workers on fixed-term contracts.
