The SMS line is the useful one
Most provinces publish a phone number and nothing else. The Eastern Cape also runs an SMS line on 34010, and in a rural district that is frequently the more practical route. It does not require airtime for a long hold, it leaves you with a record of what you asked and when, and it works where signal is too weak to hold a call.
Include the facility name and the town in the message. “Dordrecht Hospital, Chris Hani district” is enough for the call centre to route it, and a reply that names a person or an extension is worth more than a switchboard number you found online.
Why there is no number for the hospital itself
Provinces differ enormously in what they publish. The Western Cape maintains a page per facility with its address and hours. Mpumalanga publishes management contacts in full. The Eastern Cape publishes neither, and instead centralises everything behind the call centre above.
- Numbers for small district hospitals circulate in online directories anyway. They are copied between listing sites, rarely checked, and often years out of date.
- A stale number for a hospital is worse than none, because it costs someone a call and the belief that they have tried.
- The call centre is answered and maintained. That is the whole reason the province points people at it.
Better routes than phoning
- Your clinic card or referral letter. Facility numbers are commonly printed on them, and yours is as current as your last visit.
- Your local clinic. Clinics deal with their district hospital daily and hold the working number. This is the single most reliable route and it is usually the closest.
- The hospital reception in person. In a town the size of Dordrecht this is often faster than any phone route.

Getting seen
