Casualty and the night supervisor share a number

That is not a misprint in the provincial sheet, and it tells you how the hospital works after hours. Outside office hours, the person answering the casualty line is the night supervisor, who is the senior nurse running the hospital overnight.

The mortuary number

We publish it because it is genuinely hard to find and people need it at the worst possible time. After a death in hospital, the family has to identify the deceased, obtain the medical certificate of cause of death, and arrange collection by a funeral undertaker. The mortuary is the department that handles the first two.

A regional hospital for three townships

Pholosong serves a population of roughly 900,000 across Tsakane, KwaThema and Duduza, with about 300 beds. Services include paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, antenatal care, and HIV, TB and STI treatment.

As a regional hospital it takes referrals from clinics and district hospitals. Start at a clinic for anything routine, since that is where the referral letter comes from, and remember that in Gauteng the City runs many of the clinics while the province runs the hospitals.

Bring your identity document, clinic card and file number, referral letter, current medicines in their packaging, and proof of income. Fees are means-tested, with pregnant women and children under six treated free of charge.
