The Fish River Canyon hike is not a walk
Most people searching this region are heading for the canyon, and the multi day hike through it is one of the most demanding trails in southern Africa. It is tightly controlled, and people arrive expecting to start on the day.
- A permit is required and numbers are limited. Book well ahead through the parks authority rather than turning up.
- A recent medical certificate of fitness is normally required, and groups usually have a minimum size. Confirm the current rules before planning around it.
- The hike is only open during the cooler months. It closes over the hot season because the heat in the canyon is genuinely dangerous.
- There is no evacuation once you are in. Getting someone out of the canyon is slow and difficult, which is why the requirements exist.
- Viewpoints on the rim need no permit and are what most visitors actually want.
Driving in southern Namibia
- Most roads here are gravel, and the commonest problem is a puncture or a rollover from driving too fast on loose surface. Slow down and check the spare before you leave tar.
- Fuel stops are far apart. Fill up at every opportunity and carry water for the vehicle and yourselves.
- Do not drive at night. Livestock and game on unfenced roads make this the single biggest risk.
- Crossing from South Africa needs the vehicle’s papers, a bank letter for a financed car, cash for border charges, and documents for a child not travelling with both parents.

Namibia is a separate country. The Consumer Protection Act does not apply, and neither the National Consumer Commission nor the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud has jurisdiction.
