You do not need to phone anyone for a Discovery tax certificate. Discovery publishes a WhatsApp route that returns the certificate immediately, and that is faster than the call centre in tax season, when the call centre is at its busiest precisely because everyone wants the same document.

Through the Discovery app

For a medical scheme certificate, log in and select Health, then Your plan, then Policy documents, then Tax certificate, and choose the tax year and how you want it delivered. For a Discovery Invest certificate the path is different: log in and select Investments, then Secure document vault, then Tax, and pick the certificate you want.

What the certificate is for and what it is not

The medical scheme tax certificate shows contributions paid and claims not recovered from the scheme for the tax year. SARS uses it to work out your medical tax credits. It is not a claims history, not a statement of your available benefit, and not proof of membership for a new employer, all of which are separate documents. Ask for the right one by name.

Getting the year right

  • The South African tax year runs from 1 March to the end of February, so a certificate for the 2026 tax year covers March 2025 to February 2026
  • The certificate is normally available shortly after the tax year closes, not on the day it ends
  • If you changed schemes mid-year you need a certificate from each scheme, and the old scheme is still obliged to give you yours
  • The main member receives the certificate; a dependant does not get a separate one

If the certificate is wrong or missing

  • Request it again on 0860 756 756 first, since most failures are the wrong tax year selected rather than a missing document
  • If a figure is wrong, raise it on 0860 99 88 77 with your membership number and the specific amount, and ask for a corrected certificate in writing
  • For an unresolved dispute with a medical scheme, the Council for Medical Schemes is the statutory regulator and takes complaints directly
