Client care runs the longest hours during the week, so an early-morning or late-evening call is more likely to be answered than a mid-afternoon one. In an emergency, 0860 50 50 50 is the number, and WhatsApp works by sending the word “emergency”.
Cancelling properly
- Give the cancellation date you want in writing, and ask for written confirmation back. A verbal instruction with no reference number is what later disputes are made of.
- Do not simply stop the debit order. King Price states that if you instruct your bank not to honour a premium, or reverse it, you are not covered for the period that premium would have paid for.
- It adds that if a claim was paid in that month, it may recover the claim amount from you, and reserves the right to cancel the policy and to refuse to insure you in future.
- Make sure the new cover starts before the old one ends, especially on a financed vehicle where the bank requires comprehensive cover.
- Check your final statement for a pro-rata refund or a shortfall, and keep the confirmation with your records.
Premiums, grace periods and renewals
Two things from King Price’s own FAQs are worth knowing before you cancel, because they decide whether you are covered in the gap.
The first is the grace period: King Price expects the premium to be paid in full, and no later than the fifteenth day of the grace period. A premium that is never collected because you cancelled the debit order mid-month is not the same thing as a cancelled policy, and the unpaid month is not covered.
The second is renewals. King Price reviews policies annually, recalculating the premium from your risk profile, inflation, repair and parts costs, climate-related risk and your claims history. If your premium jumped at renewal and that is why you are cancelling, ask for the renewal calculation before you move; a changed excess or a corrected vehicle value sometimes solves it without switching insurers.
If the cancellation is not processed
Escalate inside King Price first. It runs a compliments and complaints form on its site, and publishes complaints@kingprice.co.za for compliance-related complaints. Quote the date of your original cancellation instruction, the channel you used and any reference number you were given.
If a debit order goes off after the confirmed cancellation date, raise it with King Price and with your bank at the same time, since the bank can reverse an unauthorised debit order within the time limits it sets.
