A Liberty retirement fund is not handled by the number on your life policy. Retirement funds sit with Liberty Corporate, which has its own contact centre, and phoning the retail line first is the usual reason a fund query takes a week.

Your employer’s fund is not Liberty’s to decide
This is the distinction that decides who can answer you. An employer-sponsored retirement fund is a separate legal entity with its own board of trustees. Liberty administers it and may be the sponsor of the umbrella fund, but benefit rules, withdrawal decisions and death-benefit allocations are the trustees’. Liberty publishes a Your Fund and Trustees section for exactly this reason. If an answer is “the trustees must decide”, that is accurate rather than an evasion.
Pension fund or provident fund, and why it matters less than it did
The old rule was that a pension fund forced you to take most of the benefit as a monthly income while a provident fund could be taken as cash. Since the 2021 harmonisation those rules have largely converged, and contributions made after that date are annuitised in both. Your vested rights on the older money are protected — but the split is fund-specific, so ask Liberty Corporate for a benefit statement showing the vested and non-vested portions separately. Do not assume the answer from the fund’s name.
Two-pot
Liberty publishes a Two-Pot Retirement section. Under the two-component system a portion of new contributions goes to a savings component you may access, and the rest to a retirement component you may not touch until retirement. A withdrawal from the savings component is taxed at your marginal rate, not at the retirement tables, and it permanently reduces what you retire on. Ask for the tax quote before you withdraw, not after.
Death benefits take time, and that is the law
A death benefit from a retirement fund is not distributed by the will. Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act requires the trustees to trace and consider all financial dependants, which can take up to twelve months. That is not the administrator stalling. Give the fund every dependant’s details early — the delay usually comes from tracing, not from processing.
Unclaimed benefits
Liberty runs an Unclaimed Benefits search. If you or a relative left an employer years ago and never claimed, start there with the identity number and the former employer’s name. It costs nothing, and no agent is needed — be wary of anyone offering to trace a benefit for a percentage.
Escalation
- Complain to the fund and to Liberty Corporate first, in writing, and keep the reference.
- A complaint about a retirement fund goes to the Pension Funds Adjudicator, free to members.
- Fraud or misconduct can be reported to Liberty’s independent whistleblowing hotline on 0800 204 547, run by an outside provider rather than by Liberty.
