For a Nedbank home insurance claim, Nedbank displays 0800 333 111 for loss or damage to your car, home or personal belongings, with insurance@nedbank.co.za as the general insurance mailbox. Home cover sits in Nedbank’s MyCover short-term range, which splits the house into building, contents, All Risks and alternative energy covers.

One caution carried over from Nedbank’s claims page: the printed 0800 number is linked to 0860 333 111, which is charged at share-call rates rather than being free. Dial it manually instead of tapping it.

Which cover your claim falls under

“Home insurance” is not one product at Nedbank. MyCover splits the house into separate covers, and knowing which one applies is the first thing you will be asked.

  • Building Insurance covers the structure, for fires, flood damage and other natural disasters.
  • House Contents covers what is inside, from furniture to appliances, against loss, theft or damage, with repair or replacement.
  • All Risks covers portable possessions such as a cellphone or laptop, against theft, loss or damage, anywhere in the world.
  • Alternative Energy Insurance covers solar panels, batteries, inverters and accessories, from as little as R99 a month.

A stolen laptop is an All Risks matter, not a contents one, and a burnt-out inverter may fall under the alternative energy cover rather than under buildings. Saying which cover you hold shortens the call.

The same range also includes Vehicle Insurance and Legal Expenses Cover, and Nedbank notes that its vehicle assist services include roadside assistance, a pick-me-up service and a drive-me-home service.

If your home is uninhabitable

This is the benefit worth knowing about on the day you need it, and people routinely forget they have it.

Nedbank lists alternative accommodation as a House Contents benefit, for when your home becomes uninhabitable. If a fire or a flood has made the house unusable, raise that on the first call rather than arranging somewhere to stay yourself and asking afterwards.

Building Insurance carries access to 24-hour services from preapproved suppliers. After a burst geyser or storm damage, using their supplier rather than the first tradesman you find protects the claim, because an unapproved repair can complicate what gets paid.

Call 0800 333 111 before you authorise any repair work.

Report the crime first

For theft, burglary or any criminal act, Nedbank’s published instruction is to report it to the police immediately and get a case number, keep it to hand, and then contact Nedbank to register the claim.

That order matters on a household claim. Without a case number the claim waits, and obtaining one days later is harder to do and harder to justify.

Claim-free years are worth money

Nedbank advertises 10% cashback after three claim-free years across the MyCover products, and up to 20% off premiums.

Worth doing the arithmetic before claiming for something small. A minor claim resets a benefit that is measured in years, and for a low-value loss the cashback and any excess together may exceed what you would be paid.

Ask what the excess is before you log the claim. It is a fair question and the answer sometimes changes the decision.

Before you call Nedbank home insurance

  • Have your policy number and the address of the insured property.
  • Have the date and time of the incident, and the police case number where a crime is involved.
  • Photograph the damage before anything is moved, cleaned or repaired. Photographs taken at the scene carry more weight than a description given afterwards.
  • For contents or All Risks, have proof of purchase, serial numbers and model details for the items claimed.

Nedbank publishes no operating hours for the claims line but describes it as available at any time of day, and offers a call-back form if you would rather not hold.
