Two completely different things get called credit card insurance, and they are claimed in different places. One is cover on the card debt if you die or cannot work. The other is the travel and purchase cover bundled free with certain cards. Nedbank Insurance handles the first; the benefits on the second are usually administered by a third party.

Official contact channels

  • Nedbank Insurance, personal: 0800 333 111, or +27 10 217 4076 from abroad
  • Hours: Monday to Friday 06:00 to 18:00, Saturday 07:00 to 15:00, Sunday 10:00 to 14:00
  • Nedbank Insurance, business: 0800 333 111, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:30
  • For a query about the card account itself rather than the cover, the 24-hour contact centre is 0800 555 111
  • Have the card number and the policy or certificate number ready. The insurance desk cannot find a policy from a name alone

Cover on the card balance

  • This is credit life cover attached to the card, and it settles or services the outstanding balance on death, disability or retrenchment, depending on the policy
  • It is charged monthly on your card statement. Check your statement for it, because many people are paying for cover they have forgotten they hold
  • You are entitled to see the policy wording, the premium and the exclusions. Ask for the certificate if you have never received one
  • You may substitute your own policy of at least equivalent cover instead of the bank product. The bank may not refuse a valid substitution

The benefits that come with the card

  • Some cards include automatic basic travel insurance when you buy your ticket with the card. It is not automatic in the sense of covering everything, and there are age limits and trip-length limits
  • Purchase protection, extended warranty and price protection appear on some tiers and not others
  • These are underwritten and administered by a third party, so the claim goes to that administrator, not to the Nedbank contact centre
  • Get the certificate of cover before you travel, and read the medical exclusions. Basic bundled travel cover is rarely enough on its own for a long or adventurous trip

Claiming and complaining

  • Claim as soon as the event happens. Late notification is one of the most common reasons a valid claim is refused
  • Get every refusal in writing with the clause relied on, and ask for the full policy wording if you have not been given it
  • For a rejected or delayed claim, the National Financial Ombud is on 0860 800 900, or WhatsApp 066 473 0157
  • Nedbank Client Complaints Helpline: 0860 444 000
